The new building stands close to Nicosia General Hospital, on land donated by the state.

In her opening speech, the President of the Karaiskakio Foundation Dr Popi Kanaris, explained that the Karaiskakio Foundation is a non- profitable organisation, which was founded by The Leukaemia Society UK, Mr. Michalis Karaiskakis, The Ministry of Health, and the Platelet Donor Association of Cyprus. The Foundation is in memory of Andreas Karaiskakis, John Triteos and Anna Georgiou.

The Karaiskakio Foundation has now been giving hope to patients since 1996, the Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Registry with more than 105,000 registered volunteer donors, has the highest per capita ratio of donors in the world.

President Christofias said “The inauguration of the privately owned facilities of the Karaiskakio Foundation, constitutes a landmark for our struggle against blood cancer”, adding that “Foundations like the Karaiskakio make us proud”.
“With the support of the state and other nongovernmental organizations, the Karaiskakio Foundation gets a new base today so that it can fulfil its dream to create a modern centre of blood cancer”, he pointed out, adding that “our common aim is to create a modern biomedical centre that would concentrate its activities in the research of blood cancer”.

In 1994, search for a donor for John Triteos and Anna Georgiou highlighted the shortage of donors of Mediterranean origin. This meant that, because of their genetic background, leukaemia sufferers worldwide were being denied the chance of life.

It was clear that the best chances of successful recruitment would be from a Mediterranean country. The Leukaemia Society (U.K.) worked very hard to make, this possibility, a reality.

The Karaiskakio Foundation set off with a wish to offer hope to patients with leukaemia or any other haematological diseases, and today has been acknowledged both locally and internationally as a modern scientific centre of high quality.

Representing The Leukaemia Society (UK), at the inauguration were, Maria Nicolaou (Chairman), Harry Christoforou (Vice-Chairman) and Androulla Stylianou (Co-ordinator).
